Star Avenue
Mixed-use project with convenience and efficiency as its key objective
Chiangmai in Northern Thailand is famous for its numerous bustling markets across the city. Unfortunately, the shopping malls in Chiangmai have been much less successful. Many of the community malls have struggled to attract enough customers to survive.
Star Avenue was originally a plot packed with shop houses but without the tenants to fill them. Contour interviewed the local community, tourists and tenants to understand more about the missing needs of the potential customers. Following the discovery phase, Contour recommended removing many of the original buildings and re-arranging the site to utilise the land more effectively. Once this was completed it allowed space for a community mall to be included on the site and draw in the customers.
Research had shown that a large proportion of the potential customers would like a short-lived, efficient retail experience in the area as many were parents at the nearby schools and tourists heading to or from the local bus station. For this reason, Contour concentrated on making the mall a convenient, efficient experience.
Star Avenue also aimed to cater for the local affluent community by including Rimping, a high-end gourmet grocery store, and a roof top bar and restaurant.
